How to record and upload a local Zoom recording to a class Canvas site as a Student

Terminology note: Canvas sites are linked to Panopto—CTS's video storage platform. So you'll technically be uploading your video to Panopto, not to Canvas. (Your professor will then link the video from the class Panopto folder to the Canvas site for ease of access, but you don't have to worry about that part.)

Check Box with Check Prerequisites

Permission from your professor - by default, students cannot upload videos to their class Panopto folder. (If your professor gave you the link to this page, then you have met this prerequisite:)
Make sure that your computer has enough storage for each video you're recording (which will be a maximum of about 500 MB for each recording—and this is the max for an hour-long recording, yours will likely be smaller than that).
Make sure you are using  Zoom's desktop client , not an Android or iOS mobile app nor the web client. You probably already know if your computer meets the system requirements to download the Zoom desktop client, but just in case, here's a  link to Zoom's desktop system requirements .
Also ensure you are using a minimum or higher version of Zoom. (If you've installed all of Zoom's updates, you probably don't have to worry about this.) See  this article  for more information on version requirements.
Not required, but strongly recommended: fast, reliable internet and a fast, reliable computer—during one part of the process you can't shut down nor or restart your computer nor close your laptop and during another part you need to stay connected to the internet.

Red Circle Up Arrow Recording and Uploading Process

Before the Meeting

If you're going to be screen-sharing and don't want the final recording to have the participants to be placed over the window that is being shared, follow these steps:
    Open the Zoom desktop app
Click the Home Tab > Settings button (in the top right corner) > Recording
And then make sure both the "Record video during screen sharing" and "Place video next to the shared screen in the recording" settings are checked.
    Close the settings window.

In the Zoom Meeting

    Click Record
Make sure your screen is showing what you want to be recorded
When recording locally, you cannot record the Active Speaker, Gallery View and shared screen separately. Rather, local recordings capture the meeting from the perspective that you are recording from. (So if you are in speaker view, that is the recorded video layout. If you pin a participant, then that view is recorded.) I.e., this recording option is simple and doesn't allow for more than one screen to be recorded at a time--but it will record camera and a screen-share at the same time. For more information, see the  Local Recordings Layouts section of this Zoom Guide .
Pause or Stop the recording as needed (e.g., stop recording before your breakout room ends)
In general, pausing is recommended over stopping, because one video file will be easier to manage moving forward.

After the meeting

This whole process could take anywhere from ~10-45 minutes depending on computer and internet speeds, but your actual time-on-task is only ~3 minutes. In other words, it will take just as long to read this guide as it will to actually do the steps!
Keep your computer open/running until Zoom has converted the recording.
Important! After the meeting has ended, Zoom will convert the recording. Restarting or shutting down your computer, putting the hard disk to sleep, or closing your laptop will interrupt the conversion process. Please refrain from all of these until the conversion process is done.
Once the conversion is complete, the recording file folder should open automatically.
If it doesn't open, you can go to the Meetings tab of your Zoom client, and then click the “Recorded” filter above the list of meetings. Then you can click “Open” to open the file location of the recording. (If you have a local recording that hasn't been converted to a video file yet, click Convert to convert the recording to a video file and display the options below. See  this Zoom guide  if you're still having troubles finding the recording.)
Rename the video (via the right-click menu or some other means). Please follow any naming conventions your professor has communicated to you.
Leave this file folder open, and open the Canvas site for your class in a web browser ( Google Chrome  is strongly recommended, as it works best with all the tech we use at CTS—especially Canvas and Panopto).
Then click Panopto Video in the main blue menu on the left.
From the file folder, Click and drag the video file (the .mp4) onto the main portion of the Panopto Video page (which will likely be populated with a list of other videos).
If you're over the right area, a small message should appear at the bottom that says "Drop videos to instantly upload to: [the Course Name]"
Let go of the mouse button to drop it into the Panopto folder.
Important! Please keep this tab open on your browser and remain connected to the internet until the upload is finished. Wait until the message “you can close this window now” appears before closing the window.
After the upload is finished, tell your professor the name of the video and that it's done uploading.
